Our Physicians

Kenneth S. Nelson, M.D.

Dr. Nelson has been a physician in Westchester for over 20 years.  Upon receiving his B.S. in Biology from Illinois Benedictine College, Dr. Nelson graduated from The Chicago Medical School.  After completing his residency in Family Medicine at LaGrange Memorial Hospital, Dr. Nelson spent several years at the University of Chicago studying hypertension.  As do all the physicians in the Prairie Medical Group, Dr. Nelson provides care to the entire family from newborn to geriatric, and everyone in-between. 

He currently lives with his wife and four daughters, and their Golden Retriever, Hailey.

Donald D. Higgins, Jr., D.O.

Dr. Higgins is a graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (Midwestern University).  He completed his Residency in Family Medicine at LaGrange Memorial Hospital and has been in practice in Westchester since 1988.  He is additionally certified in Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy, Geriatric Medicine, laser hair removal, and Photofacials.  He is part of the Clinical Faculty at Loyola Medical School and Midwestern University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Higgins is a past Chairman of the Hinsdale/LaGrange Hospital Department of Family Medicine and currently serves on the Credentials Committee there.  He is an elected member of his local School Board. 

Most importantly, Dr. Higgins spends his free time with his wife and children.  He believes that service to our patients and community, teaching, sharing, and giving back are essential to his personal mission.  “Family is the most important part of my life.  With that in mind, I try to treat each patient as if they were a member of my immediate family.”

Thomas M. Nelson, D.O.

Dr. Nelson is a 1981 graduate of Illinois Benedictine College, where he received his B.S. in Biology.  After graduating from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1987, he went on to complete his Family Practice Residency at LaGrange Memorial Hospital.  There, he served as Chief Resident in 1989 – 1990.

Dr. Nelson is one of the original partners if the Prairie Medical Group, where he continues as the Managing Partner, and is the Medical Director of the Westchester Osteoporosis Center.

His special interests are in Sports Medicine, Nutrition, and athletic training at Nazareth Academy where he is the team physician and functions as the defensive coordinator for the sophomore football team.

He is blessed with a supportive wife and two children.
